IBM Thinkpad laptops lock the hard drive as well as the BIOS when the supervisor password is set. I don't know if this is always the fix, but you might want to try it as a first step.
Your suggestion fixed it right up! You won't be able to boot into Windows if you remove the hard drive, of course, but the system should at least tell you "No bootable device found."
