The shut down happened also as I was trying to covert a CD to mp3. For stress test try using Prime95. Looks like water cooling may be the only solution unless Kaspersky implement an upper limit control on cpu utilization during the full scan. It appears that the accumulation of dust on the CPU prevents the cooling system to work efficiently. Laptop Shuts Down During Virus Scan I don't know if it will fix the problem in Windows 7 too. This morning I was able to run a quasi complete scan and I found a virus, but I don't think it was a very dangerous one. I hope someone can find answers because I have not been able to find anything out through the microsoft.com nor Norton's website.
